The interveiw that I am reading is about this man named Mr. Dodge. His wife died three years before the interveiw and he had insited that he would never hire a woman to work in his house for him. Instead he has a dog and he is one of his best friends. And he said "She's just a dog an doesn't no any better now a housekeeper might not be assential but a dog is." He was a mason and a carpenter for a living and normally came home to a cold house with no food which is very hard to live with at these times. He told the interveiwer that his mother would make clothes for him and for other men and would only make $1.50 at the most.
